BROWNFIELDS

Brownfield Revitalization

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a brownfield can be defined as "property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant".

Montgomery County is home to dozens of redevelopment opportunities that may potentially be brownfield sites. Many of these sites are located in Boroughs or older sections of Townships throughout the County. Frequently these sites are abandoned or underutilized and ripe for redevelopment. Redeveloping these sites produces numerous positive benefits for both the municipality and the County, including: 1) returning an abandoned or underutilized parcel to productive use, increasing the municipal tax base; 2) remediating a potentially environmentally hazardous condition and 3) reducing suburban sprawl by shifting development towards existing infrastructure and away from undeveloped greenfield sites.

The Redevelopment Authority works at the direction of municipalities to strategically reinvest at these sites.  The Redevelopment Authority can assemble public financing to help complement private investment.
